Cisco CCNA Exam Tutorial Split Horizon And Hub-And-Spoke Networks

For CCNA exam success, you had better know what split horizon is, how to turn it off, and when to turn it off. Knowing when to turn split horizon off is also important in production networks, because it can cause a hub-and-spoke network to have incomplete routing tables on the spokes.

Split horizon exists for a very good reason - routing loop prevention. The rule of split horizon states that a router cannot send an advertisement for a route out the same interface that it came in on. Split horizon is on by default on all interfaces running RIP, IGRP, and EIGRP.

In this CCNA tutorial, R1 will serve, as the hub and R2 and R3 will be the spokes. We’ll first configure EIGRP over the 172.16.123.0 /24 network, the network connecting the three routers.

R1#conf t

R1(config)#router eigrp 100

R1(config-router)#no auto-summary

R1(config-router)#network 172.12.123.0 0.0.0.255

R2#conf t

R2(config)#router eigrp 100

R2(config-router)#no auto-summary

R2(config-router)#network 172.12.123.0 0.0.0.255

R3#conf t

R3(config)#router eigrp 100

R3(config-router)#no auto-summary

R3(config-router)#network 172.12.123.0 0.0.0.255

Running show ip eigrp neighbor on R1 shows that adjacencies to R2 and R3 are up.

R1#show ip eigrp neighbor

IP-EIGRP neighbors for process 100

H Address Interface Hold Uptime SRTT RTO Q Seq Type

(sec) (ms) Cnt Num

1 172.12.123.3 Se0/0 11 00:02:45 1 5000 0 1

0 172.12.123.2 Se0/0 161 00:03:01 1 5000 0 1

Each router will now advertise its loopback address via EIGRP.

R1#conf t

R1(config)#router eigrp 100

R1(config-router)#network 1.1.1.0 0.0.0.255

R2#conf t

R2(config)#router eigrp 100

R2(config-router)#network 2.2.2.0 0.0.0.255

R3#conf t

R3(config)#router eigrp 100

R3(config-router)#network 3.3.3.0 0.0.0.255

Running show ip eigrp route on each router shows that R1 has a route for both R2’s and R3’s loopback. R2 and R3 will only see R1’s loopback address, and not each other’s. Why?

R1#show ip route eigrp

2.0.0.0/24 is subnetted, 1 subnets

D 2.2.2.0 [90/2297856] via 172.12.123.2, 00:03:19, Serial0/0

D 1.1.1.0 [90/2297856] via 172.12.123.1, 00:05:17, Serial0/0.31

EIGRP uses Split Horizon by default to prevent routing loops. In this lab, though, it prevents full network reachability. R2 and R3 both form neighbor relationships with R1’s Serial physical interface. R2 advertises its loopback address to R1’s Serial interface, as does R3. Split Horizon does not allow a route to be advertised back out the same interface it was received on. This prevents R1 from advertising R2’s loopback to R3, or R3’s loopback to R2.

Split Horizon must be disabled to allow full network reachability in this lab. To do so, run no ip split-horizon eigrp 100 on R1’s Serial interface. When Split Horizon is disabled, that will cause the neighbor
relationships to fail, and then reestablish. Run show ip route eigrp 100 on both R2 and R3. The appropriate route to the remote loopback address will now appear.

R1#conf t

Purchasing Your Portable Laptop

Before you purchase your laptop you’ll want to familiarize yourself with the various features and determine what you need and what you do not. Some folks seek out all the latest bells and whistles. For others it’s about getting your typical job done efficiently and cost effectively.

Here are some helpful hints:

To save yourself money look for a Celeron processor. Less expensive than a Pentium, it will work fine for all but the most detailed graphics projects. If you’re a graphic artist or a professional programmer, however, seek out a laptop with Pentium processing.

126 MB RAM is the least you can be comfortable with nowadays, no matter what you’re doing. And, unless you’re buying used you’re probably not going to find a laptop with less anyway. But what if you want to upgrade your memory? How easy is it to do that? How accessible is the panel for the memory chips? Are you comfortable with doing it yourself if you have to remove the case? Make sure it’s not a laptop that actually requires some outside technical help to install more memory. .

The life of the installed battery is important. Generally the range of battery life available to laptops is two-four hours. Which is adequate depends on where you’re going to be when you use your laptop. If you’re a traveling sales rep who needs a laptop to your emails and prepare the daily report from your hotel room each evening you won’t be using your battery a lot. If, however, you envision the life of the mobile warrior, sometimes creating your graphic or written masterpiece from the beach, or while traveling by air, you won’t be able to rely on the power cord and electricity. You’ll want that four-hour battery.

Make sure you have a minimum of three ports, to accommodate a number of peripherals such as printers, cameras and external floppy drives or modems. The number of ports you need depends on the internal features of your laptop as well as your own need for peripherals.

Obviously, if you have an internal modem you don’t need a port for an external one. But if you have only a CD drive and copy to floppy on your PC at home, for the two to talk to each other you’re going to need an external floppy drive on your laptop. For this you’ll need a port. Be cognizant also of the types of ports. Your old mouse may connect by parallel port, but the newest versions require USB connection.

Make sure you have an internal modem and fax rather than external. And if you’re shopping for a brand new laptop the wireless feature is terrific. Many places, such as RV and other resorts are totally Wi-Fi capable now.

If you’re used to a traditional mouse do play around with several versions of mice available on laptops. Some will drive you crazy until you get used to them. See if you’re most comfortable with trackball, touch pad or trackpoint. While you’re checking that, play with that keyboard. So much smaller than a PC keyboard, you may have difficulty typing accurately with some. Try several.

The final things you’ll want to compare are the software and the warranty. Major software programs such as Windows are almost always included in brand new systems, but do check. Especially if buying used. You can spend many hundreds of dollars on Microsoft Office and the latest Windows version if you don’t have a version that you can upgrade.

Hyundai Azera, 2006 The Weekly Driver

As the replacement for the XG350, Hyundai introduced the Azera earlier this year as the Korean manufacturer’s most luxurious and most expensive offering to date.

Luxurious and expensive have never been synonymous with Hyundai. And with the Azera only luxurious applies. It’s a vehicle that may finally allow Hyundai to infringe on the overwhelmingly popular choices in the midsize class Honda Accord, Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry.

Even with the name change alone, the high-end Hyundai has a chance. The now-gone XG350 had its upside, but its name seemed more conducive to a robot or a vacuum cleaner, rather than a car.

Although it’s hardly a household word, at least Hyundai Azera has a catchy sound. The car’s name, in fact, is based on the word azure, the specific shade of the color blue.

But beyond name change, the Azera features a lot as Hyundai’s flagship vehicle. And it has been nearly universally praised for its vast standard features list, refinement and overall value.

Available in SE and Limited editions, I tested the latter as my weekly driver. Both offerings included a 3.8-liter, 263-horsepower V6 with a five-speed automatic transmission. It’s plenty of engine in every situation short, quick acceleration bursts to the long-term, steady freeway acceleration. The Limited edition has 17-inch wheels, while the SE offers 16-inch wheels.

During my test, the Azera offered a quick, smooth, confident and quiet ride with the exception of some high-end wind rush. Steering and handling were sufficient, with ABS brakes, an electronic stability control system and a traction control system all standards.

The Azera’s mechanical soundness is complemented well by its exterior and interior design. Once criticized for its lack of quality materials and craftsmanship, the Azera’s interior is now well-designed, with an upscale feel. The exterior color, Aubergine (dark, rich purple) wasn’t particularly appealing. But it did match the two-tone tan (leather seats, carpets and steering) and light black interior (console, door paneling).

The Azera has its share of woodgrain trim from the steering wheel to door handles and the center console to the instrumentation panel. It’s all standard, as are: dual front power and heated seats, power rear sunshade, AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with steering wheel controls, air conditioning and cruise control.

The Azera (Limited Edition) had only one option, the Premium Package ($1,500). It includes power sunroof and an upgraded Infinity audio system with a 6-disc, in-dash CD Changer.

If there’s a downside to the Azera, it’s a lack of an available navigation system. But Hyundai has announced the option will be available soon.

Yet the absence of a GPS system is a small issue. The Azera’s got plenty going for it, particularly considering its price point. It’s more well-known competitors all make fine midsize vehicles, but Hyundai now has a quality “player” in the mix.

The Weekly Driver: 2006 Hyundai Azera

Safety features - Dual front, front and rear seat-mounted and side-impact and roof-mounted side-curtain airbags.

Fuel Mileage (estimates) - 19 mpg (city), 28 mpg (highway).

Warranty - Bumper to bumper, 5 years/36,000 miles; Powertrain, 10 years, 100,000 miles; Corrosion, 7 years/unlimited m miles; (24-hour) roadside assistance program, 5 years/unlimited miles

Base price - $26,835.00

Wireless Internet

We have all come a long way from connecting to the internet via the old 2400 baud telephone line modem to a slow AOL connection. Now, there are many ways to connect to high-speed internet at various costs and service levels. Today, the Cable TV provided high-speed internet access usually costs about $50 per month in the United States and provides speeds from 1 megabits per second to 3 megabits per second (in some locations). The baby bells have also jumped on the high-speed internet service bandwagon, with various DSL service offers. The DSL service is delivered to your home or office over a standard telephone line, and the cost can be as low as $25 per month for high-speed access.

The best thing about high-speed internet service (other than you don’t have to wait forever for your favorite web page to load) is the option to connect other users to your same internet connection - and share the service. There are two ways to share an internet connection - either hard wire network (using twisted (4) pair Cat 5 wire), or Wireless network. The old-fashioned hard-wire method is still the best for constant connectivity and security. With a hard-wire network and the correct security precautions, it is very difficult for a hacker to access your network from across the street! However, wiring your house or small business for hard-wired internet and network access can be a big job with big costs, and your computer is “stuck” in one location near the wire outlet. Today the wireless network solutions from LinksysÒ (a Division of Cisco Systems, Inc.) and CableOrganizer.com are affordable, reliable, and secure. Here is a fast primer on how to build your first indoor wireless network to share internet access.

The first thing you have to do is purchase a high-speed internet connection from your favorite local internet provider. Both DSL or Cable internet access will be delivered through a high-speed DSL or Cable modem. Now to set-up a simple wireless network you need two more things; a Wireless Router (to connect to your high-speed modem), and a way to receive the wireless signal at your computer, a wireless network card. Wireless Network Cards are available for internal installation as a PCI card, or, as an external plug-in card for your laptop, or as a USB port connection on any computer. I prefer the USB port connected network cards because they are easily portable to any computer (laptop or desktop). The instructions that are provided with the router and the network cards are relatively easy to understand. Just remember to follow the instructions carefully from the beginning. You will be connected wirelessly to the router and the internet very quickly, and you will be amazed at the quality of the 300 feet range connection.

Before completing your wireless network configuration, please don’t forget to install the recommended security precautions. The LinksysÒ Wireless Routers allow you to specify only the computers that you want to allow access to your network (via the network card MAC address). And, you can also configure 128-bit encryption of all the wireless traffic from your computers to the wireless router. This security is sufficient to deny access to the most malicious hacker attempts, and it is all provided free with your LinksysÒ Wireless network from CableOrganizer.com. There is nothing better than surfing the net wirelessly from your backyard patio on a nice day. Have fun!

Desktop Management Interface

Desktop Management Interface is a specialized system to manage many computers in a very large establishment. The basic component of Desktop Management Interface is the Management Information Format Database (MIFD). The database stores all information on a local computer. Experts say that Desktop Management Interface is nothing more than a set of application programming interfaces or APIs. Thanks to Desktop Management Interface, any computer system can exchange information.

Desktop Management Interface has three different components - service layer, management interface and component interface. The management interface is a text file that has information on hardware and software. The component interface is an application program interface (API). The service layer acts as a link between management interface and component interface.

Desktop Management Interface comes in handy when you are trying to identify and manage computer components, and is accepted as the ideal desktop methodology. The interface is the storehouse of all information on computers. Desktop Management Interface is the brainchild of a Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF), and has made the jobs of IT managers, technical experts and common users much easier. The innovative and sophisticated Desktop Management Interface helps people get information on processor category, installation dates, maintenance records, power sources, peripherals, etc.

Desktop Management Interface has some extremely advantageous aspects. Vendors and systems integrators can exchange information effectively, and you don’t have to install any particular hardware or operating system to have it running efficiently. You can run the management interface on a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and on non-network computers.

Artificial Intelligence and Human Recognition Mirroring Errors

Today we are building robots and computers, which mirror humans and can interact with them. This works very well for many things and can assist humans in accepting their computer or robotic assistant counterparts. Unfortunately when computers attempt to decipher text and meaning and then correspond with humans, the mirroring does not always work.

If the robot or computer is using artificial intelligent software to communicate with a human and use mirroring techniques and scaling of escalation in the conversation, they often will not suffice in keeping the human’s interest for too long. Indeed a chimpanzee, dog or cat maybe willing to continue interaction, non-verbal communication or synthesize mimicking techniques for verbal communication; however for humans it cannot work for very long especially if the human is in search of enlightenment, rather than encyclopedia or dictionary definitional content.

In corresponding with artificial intelligence on a keyboard or through the Internet the human assumes that the entity on the other side is like them; that is to say an organic carbon based human biped. There comes a time when the human is skeptical of the information and correspondence coming from the other side of the screen, often the human will begin to assume that the information comes from an ignorant human or a lawyer’esque type human and thus does not appreciate the information for what it is; pure information mixed in with mirroring conversational composites of chit chat crap.

There are many types of software used today to help un-intelligent humans with correspondence, writing or even term papers, yet what you will find is this software does not work well when the human being used as the target subject actually knows a little about a lot of things or is intimately familiar with the subject matter. For instance in the case of the CIA or NSA trying to get information of profile a target; a professor grading a term paper or a reader of a news article. So often it is obvious that the what appears at first to be a dumb human bluffing or BS’ing their way through a subject matter or the software gives its self away by acting non-human and providing erroneous or irrelevant data to a conversation, story or paper. It maybe fanciful to a human to use a robotic or computer software enhanced correspondence mechanism to save time, do homework, save labor costs or taxpayers money. But if such an artificial intelligent system delivers garbage due to shoddy programming and less than intelligent people putting in the input, then it will not suffice or solve the problem of tricking the individual, enhancing readership or convincing anyone of anything.

So, we must remember that those who program these systems to interact with humans need to be as smart or smarter (artificially that is) than the human they are corresponding to, other wise the human feels that the discussion is irrelevant, rhetoric or simply mirroring semantics. If we are to build assistant robots, they must be careful with their interactions. Now, sometimes humans act in such was, yet when they do, don’t most people simply walk away, shaking their heads? If a human stops the correspondence then you have to start all over. If the human rejects the robotic assistant then you have wasted your money in that system. Sure you can say it is work in progress and call it development costs, but it is a useless hunk of junk you see? Likewise if a student uses a system for their work and if the professor of the homework assignment is unimpressed you get a lousy grade.

Right now this is what I am giving the artificial intelligence programmers right now. Y’all need to go back to the drawing board and do some more research on the human species within a society and study how they interact in groups, one on one and in the larger over all culture. It is not a one size fits all scenario and although it is indeed smart to try to keep it simple, there needs to be more overlay on the various types of people and smarter people doing the programming. Think on that

Wireless Camera Detector to Protect Your Privacy Anywhere

Carrying a wireless camera detector is almost becoming an indispensable tool for almost anyone.

If you are a regular traveller and spend lots of time in different hotel or motel, if you are renting or even at your office you might consider using a wireless camera detector.

Last year, over 74 million dollars was spent on spy cameras alone. They are everywhere, mostly where they shouldn’t be in the first place

Are you being watched without your knowledge?

Today’s wireless cameras are so small that it can be hidden in many objects such as smoke alarms, neck ties, glasses, telephone, radios, pens, toys and other common household or office objects.

They are almost impossible to detect with the naked eye because they are incredibly small.

A good wireless camera detector is intended to help consumers ensure they are not being watched in places where they should reasonably expect privacy such as your hotel room, changing room, private office, tanning beds, etc.

How wireless camera detector works?

Wireless camera detector reads the wireless radio waves surveillance cameras transmit and alerts you with a blinking LED light and an audible alarm.

The built-in sensitivity tuner automatically scans variable distances and multiple channels and its advanced circuitry eliminates background noise, minimizing false alarms.

Wireless camera detector can be very small about 3″ long and can easily fit in your pocket, handbag or case.

Operating Principle

Most wireless camera detectors are based on the principle of optical augmentation. This refers to the phenomenon where light reflected from a focused optical system, such as a video camera, is reflected along the same path as the incident light.

This means that if a hidden camera is illuminated and viewed with the camera detector, then a strong reflection from the target camera will reveal its position to the user.

You can make discreet checks quickly and effectively for your peace of mind.

A good quality wireless camera detector is really small, will easily fit in your handbag or pocket, will help you protect your privacy by detecting any wireless wiretaps and video cameras secretly installed at your home, office or in public areas.

Christian Rivard is the publisher for http://www.wireless-security-camera-guide.com

After working for several years in the digital photography industry, Christian created a site about digital photography and now is publishing a site about wireless security camera where you can find all the information you need about wireless camera detector.

HDTV Cables

HDTV cable, also known as high definition television cable, is a specially designed high-end digital cable that hooks up an HDTV set top box and an HDTV television set. HDTV is the latest innovation in DTV signals and transmits pictures with a high resolution and clarity. The popularity of HDTV cable has made the HDTV, the latest trend in television technology.

The recognition of the HDTV television has led to a great demand in HDTV cables in the market. Currently, the market is flooded with different brands and types of HDTV cables. The Monster Cable, Cobalt Cable, and Blue Jeans Cable are some of the leading brands of HDTV cables.

Generally, all brands of the HDTV cables come with robust and highly flame-retardant outer mesh, which protects the cable from external damage and conductor. For maximum conductivity and bandwidth, most of the HDTV cables come with copper conductor, plated with sliver. To protect the signals from the interferences of RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) and EMI (Electro-Magnetic Interference), the HDTV cables are usually coated with high density quad-layer shielding. The quad-layer shielding is injected with nitrogen gas to maximize the conductivity and bandwidth of the HDTV cables.

Signals passed through the HDTV cable connections can be either analog or digital types. To meet this need, the HDTV cables come in two types; analog HDTV cables and digital HDTV cables. The analog HDTV cables are 75 ohm video coaxial cable, with RCA, BNCs or HD15 plugs at the end. The signal passed through this cable can either be ordinarily component video or RGB. Digital HDTV cables can be availed in three forms; SDI (serial digital interface), DVI (Digital Video Interface), and HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface). SDI cable is highly robust, 75 ohm video coax cables, but is not readily available to consumers. When compared with SDI cable, DVI and HDMI cables are poorly designed and can be availed from the market.

Whether it is analog HDTV cables or digital HDTV cables, it is always recommended to purchase the cables which are sweep-tested by the manufacturer. The sweep test will guarantee that the cable will not show any excessive or uneven attenuation within the required frequency range. Therefore, carefully selected HDTV cables will provide clear and high quality pictures on your HDTV televisions.

Industrial Automation - Help your Robotic Project Succeed

Investing in robotic equipment can be a big leap for a small business. Industrial robots have been automating tasks since 1961. The first industrial robot, the Unimate, worked with the die casting machines at a General Motors plant. In the last decade there has been a surge of robots being integrated into mid-sized and smaller companies. One reason is the growth and affordability of the used robot market. With the leaps made in controls technology, companies are upgrading robots before the current model has finished its life-span. However, the overall functionality of the six-axis articulated arm has not changed in the last decade. As companies consolidate and reorganize, the factory surplus is sold.

Automation benefits include saving money and reducing production time. Automation also leads to an increase in part quality and reliability. These are some tips to help you get started implementing automation onto your factory floor.

  1. Involve the Shop Floor Workers
Consulting the workers that currently produce the part is a good starting point. This is the person who has the experience to know what works and what had not worked in the past. They often have helpful insight into the process that you can not gain by simply watching. Requesting their participation in the robotic welding project will help it be more successful.
The workers who manually perform the process can provide advice on the configuration and specifications of the equipment up front, avoiding the possibility that the equipment is not as ergonomically friendly or productive as it could be. Failure to involve them disregards the insight they have gained though experience with the process.

  2. Choose your Robot Operators and Robotic Programmers Carefully
Most industrial robots are controlled by the use of teach pendants. Several of these pendants now are programmed with an interface that resembles a personal computer. An individual that is computer-literate will have less trouble learning how to instruct the robot and moving it to accomplish the desired tasks such as welding or material handling.

For instance, the challenge of transforming a manual welding process to a robotic welding process is best handled by someone with a solid background in manual welding. This would be an ideal person to select for programming or operating the robotic welder. When choosing robot operators, programmers, and technicians, special consideration should be given to motivated employees that are willing to learn and advance their skills.

  3. Make Training a Priority
It is important when purchasing a robot integrator to choose one that provides training on the robotic system. This allows your company to be able to fully utilize the robot and minimize later down-time due to mechanical problems. Ideally the person chosen to receive the training should be the future programmer or operator. With the proper training, the programmer should be able to reliably produce efficient and effective robot programs. Basic groundwork training is a minimum, with the real learning happening on the shop floor.
Generally your robotic integrator will program your robotic system to interact with your current equipment and leave you with a turnkey solution that requires only a push of a button. It is still ideal to have trained personnel on hand should a future problem arise. Routine maintenance, such as an annual grease replenishment and battery replacement, is also an issue that you will want a trained individual to perform. Many robotic systems have been destroyed by well-meaning maintenance by individuals that do not understand the complex nature of the robotic system.
  4. Watch Part Fit-Up and Repeatability
The most problematical issue with welding robots is part quality. Robotic systems are designed to repeat the same sequence of events. If the robot system has been damaged, repeatability can become an issue. Robotics systems sold feature a repeatability measurement and that should be taken into account along with payload and reach requirements. Used robots should be tested for accuracy and repeatability during the reconditioning process. When performing properly, robotic systems are more reliable and produce parts far superior in quality than manually welded parts.
Touch sensing and seam tracking can be used to compensate for weld joints that are not static, but robots are limited by the laws of physics. The use of quality equipment in conjunction with robots improves the part fit-up. Attention should be paid to lasers, welding and cutting torches, welding power supplies, raw consumables, and other variables that could lead to a loss of quality in the finished product.
  5. Calculate Estimated ROI
There has been a steady growth in the robot industry over the past decade. Experts predict that this growth trend will continue in future years. Welding robots are still the majority of the market, but many applications can be handled by robots. The general rule-of-thumb is that a robotic welder can do the work of four manual welders. Therefore when production is increasing, the choice to add robotic welders is easily justified. It will also improve efficiency, productivity, and part quality. Higher quality leads to a greater demand for your product. Improved efficiency will enable you to be more competitive in your market. The improved productivity will allow you to meet your production demands without a larger workforce.

Boxing Sparing Robots Needed

It is always difficult to find a good sparing partner to box with or practice martial arts. The better you get the fewer people who are willing to get in the ring or on the mat with your. Worse off if it is a friend and he makes a mistake, you often find yourself holding back on your gut instincts to take him out and exploit his foolishness in letting his guard down. If you do not take him down to the mat or clock him so hard he cannot see straight, you are actually doing him a disservice, as in a real fight it would have been over right then and there.

Unfortunately we live in the real world and in the real world if you are in the ring with a good friend you often hold back, if you get too tough, you trigger them to go all out when you are just there for practice and not to kick the ever-living crap out of someone.

I therefore propose Boxing Sparing Partners to spar with. Sparing Robots, which you can clock as hard as you can if the opportunity exists. Robots which you will not feel bad when you do and one which will hit you back on the level you set in case you make a mistake and unnecessarily leave an opening or let your guards down. Enough to sting you hard enough to learn the lesson but not hard enough to break you in half, break your nose or cause you a serious head injury.

Robots are perfect for sparing partners and we can build them to feel as if you are sparing with a real man, without damaging them and so they hit you back. This will help boxers and martial artists test themselves and excel in their quest to become even better. Think on this.
